The Brazeau Plant is TransAlta’s largest hydro plant. It is one of two TransAlta hydro plants on the North Saskatchewan River System in Alberta. It generates an average of 397,000 megawatt hours. TransAlta’s hydroelectric plants primarily provide electricity during periods of peak electrical demand and ensure system stability. Their operating flexibility means they can start quickly to introduce hydro power within minutes, balancing out shortages due to unexpected outages, or providing power at times of high demand. As such, the reliability of the governors systems from L&S Electric was one of the reasons TransAlta chose L&S Electric for this project. The scope of participation for L&S Electric included Turnkey supply of a digital governor head, new main distributing valve with proportional valve controlled standard hydraulic manifold and field devices including servo position feedback (MLDT) and speed sensing systems. Maintenance items such as PLC programming software and HMI software are also included.
