The L&S Electric Advanced Excitation System (AES) Automatic Voltage Regulator was selected to replace the existing Basler DECS-200 voltage regulators for the UP Power Company’s Hoist Hydro Plant’s Unit No. 2 and Unit No. 3 synchronous generators. UP Power Company choose the AES for its advanced monitoring and control features, their comfort in L&S Electric’s excitation engineering expertise, the L&S Electric provided 24/7 product support, the two (2) year warranty, the AES’s competitive price, and the commercially available spare parts.

The Unit No. 2 and Unit No. 3 synchronous generators’ rated output is 2.0 MW at 12.0 kV with a main field rating of 191 DC amps at 125 DC volts. The generators main field is fed from the unit’s rotating exciter with field requirements of 6.0 DC amperes at 125 DC volts at rated load and 0.8 power factor. The input power to the AES AVR was provided from the 120 volt, 1-phase AC station service bus.

The Hoist’s AVR is a LS-AES-VR-ECO-PB-30 Voltage Regulator System. The voltage regulator includes the AES’s standard features; a digital excitation controller with Ethernet IP communications, a 30-amp, full wave rectifier bridge assembly, an AC input breaker, AC field flashing, an MOV for over excitation protection, an AC filter, a DC filter, and a holding resistor supplied as part of L&S Electric’s Multi-controller system that includes unit control with governor function, excitation control, and unit protection all in a 2-door, climate controlled, NEMA 12 enclosure with forced ventilation.

The L&S Electric project provided services including the design and supply of the AES excitation elementary diagrams, the wiring diagrams, the assembly diagrams, operation & maintenance manual, installation engineering (cut-ins), installation supervision services, and the AES commissioning with onsite AES training.

Additionally, the project also provided (2) governor high pressure power units (HPU), (1) medium voltage switchgear, (2) neutral grounding resistors, (2) generator termination cabinets, (2) field termination cabinets, (2) vibration monitoring systems, a (1) balance of plant control system, and (1) substation protection cabinet.

The Unit No. 2 was installed October 2018 with Unit No. 3 installed in November 2018.
